Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)

You can work (ie earn a salary) while you train through a GTP.

This involves finding a school which will employ you as an unqualified teacher whilst you do your Initial Teacher Education in conjunction with a GTP provider. Find your nearest GTP provider on the TDA’s website.

Entry requirements
You will need either a physics or physics-rich undergraduate degree and physics at A-level (or equivalent). You may be asked to take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course to be accepted.

Duration
The programme usually lasts for one year and is full-time. You may be able to negotiate a part-time programme, depending on the GTP provider.

Qualifications
You will gain Qualified Teacher Status. Some will also award you a PGCE.

Salary
You will receive a salary from your employing school. In some cases this will actually be paid by the TDA which will also pay your GTP provider’s training fees. In other cases, you will be liable for these fees.

Applications
Some GTP providers will help you find a host school, whilst others will expect you to sort this out yourself.
