Routes into physics teaching

To be a physics teacher in a UK maintained school you need to have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

You can achieve QTS through two main routes:

  • University based training
  • School based training

Here is a guide to the routes through to QTS

Whichever route your choose, there are two key attributes the trainers will be looking for:

  1. Strong physics background
This usually means A-level (or equivalent) physics and a physics or physics-rich (for example engineering or geophysics) undergraduate degree or completion of a subject knowledge enhancement course. Work experience in a physics-rich environment will also be taken into account by most training providers.
  2. Evidence that you have what it takes to be a good teacher
You must spend some time observing physics lessons if you want your application to be taken seriously. Recruiters want candidates who are committed to teaching, understand its structures, empathise with young people and can communicate well. We can help you to arrange a school visit.
